Sydney Mayhem

Well where shall I start… okay usually a good place is the beginning. Having had a cramp flight from Joburg, having to eat my food off the person head in front, I arrived at Sydney airport a modern looking place in comparison to Joburg, first thing I needed to do was ring my hostel to come and pick me up….grabbed my phone…..ah first problem, I didn’t bring my phone it would cost me a fortune and probs wouldn’t work and my plans were to by one in Oz….okay this was the first sign that I knew I was gonna be jet lagged, once I found a phone, I needed the number….ahhhh I hadn’t got one (organized me aren’t I, thats a rhetorical question you don’t need to comment on that! thank you..ha ha) so next mission, find an internet cafe, forgetting I was now in a place that can understand the language of the pomm, I went on the hunt in the airport (notice still in safari mode, me tarzan and all) Thankfully it was a free internet connection…..another major difference from South Africa, were you paid for everything! Now I have the number, a phone and my sanity I made the call, they answered and in my broken english (still in SA) I told them I had arrived…..part way through I realised what I was doing!!

Up rolled my transport and the small ride to my hostel began, it had now got to the point that I was falling asleep every 5mins with a snort and a snore i would raise from my slumber….I was great at making conversation with the driver, all 3mins of it, on with my, until now hidden Ipod, usual dance and sing along, mind way through a line i’d drop off again…all I can say is dam I was tired.

So here I was at my home for the next week, Footprints…..feeling slightly lonely and still shattered I thought I would go for a game of pool with the others from my youth hostel, down the stairs in to a massive room, and stood before me a bar…screaming for me to buy a drink…well come on it would be rude not too! Drink in hand still wearing my travel stuff looking like shit I wondered to the game…too late it had already kicked off…..I began to talk to lad, who then introduced me to a whole group of other people…thank god for that…..beer went down well and the second wind took over, after a fair few I went to the hostel sat at a comp and caught up on my africa blog… A lad called Barry wondered past, sharp whitted, irish drinking champion….so here at 2 I decided…..another beer….top laugh, met more people, a 6ft american girl and her 5ft 6 mate, obviously it would be rude not to talk to them wouldn’t it? Well looks like I there was someone else doing the same stuff as me, So Barry joins the expedition, you’ll be hearing from him in a bit….already wrote a post!! HA HA.

The next day and a walk around Sydney, again you look up and the buildings tower over you, but although modern in looks, glass and all, they never look out of place, under the monorail…I mean this is a completly new concept to me a train over head, whats that all about, isn’t australia big enough or something? up to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the opera house, pub, usual touristy thing…..the mayhem was certainly obvious now, people wondering up and down the roads like ants, pressing the road crossing lights, these things sound like a computer game is going on in them…. endless beeps and then the sound of game over, I got sucked in to the swelling masses and continued the walk…..obviously a pub was required! People look at you and if your struggling to know were to go they will politly wonder up to you and ask if you need help, superb!! so friendly, but one thing kinda stood out, not many aussie people, lots of koreans, chinese etc, then it clicked we were near china town….everyone was so nice, like walking in beer garden full of tiipsy friendly folk….oh dear I am using beer descriptions…whoops, any way drink and food, back to my room, the three S’s shower, shave and S……what am I doing people are reading this!! and hit the towns once more, met yet more amazing people, more laughs and a 5 in the morning finish.

As much as sydney is busy, the place is so chilled out, no building looks out of place, the people are more then willing to help you, the weather is nice, I mean an amazing place in my opinion……but Australia is such a big place, so many more things to see.

Time for me to countinue, next post well be the stark contrast, maybe unfairly so, of Brisbane.
