Brisbane

Oh the joys of being in a real life board game!

The first night, it is compulsory to make acquaintance with as many people as you can, so to the bar seemed the best place, hey there was no way I was sleeping the amount of caffiene I drank, so dragged kicking and screaming I went to the bar, two seconds gone, playing pool….Quinny, I may yet beat you at this game!!….. we were joined by two aussies…yes I know aussies, after the abundance of non-aussie it was a welcome change. Pulling out all the moves I knew (okay not totally planned, maybe the luck of the irish was shining my way after the vain attempts to speak so) Before I knew it there was a group of people surrounding the table, so many contacts made through such a simple game!!

With a plus thought, I approached the next day contented that it would be alright here, stuck in the board game, soon my illlusions were shattered, the friendliness shown by the locals the night before, did not spill out to the shops and the like around, no matter how hard we tried to make people smile…it was not forth coming….didn’t leave us much to do, but well drink….and attempt to get in the state of origin game that evening, to no avail….where are ticket touts when you need them, outside the MEN Arena they are swarms of them, but here no, not one!! Like a drunk trying to get a beer ( i wasn’t drunk by the way) I wondered from sales person to person asking if they had tickets…nope….I walked in to the Brisbane Stadium shop the only thing seperating me from the pitch was a jail door, looking over the pitch below me I looked like a imprisoned inmate looking at the open freedom just beyond my cell door. Devastated and withdrawn, I dragged my feet along the pavement to the hostel, watching the floods of people with tickets trundle, merrily to the stadium, back to my hostel bar……two jeager-bombs later I was back on form, after that its kind of a blair, for some unknown reason. Joey (one of the aussies), barry and I proceeded to have a giggle, watched the game in the pub, pub closed, went to bed for 4hrs only to set my alarm for the champions league final at five in the morning….. to watch Liverpool lose….sleep for 4hrs more and up and away.

Stilll distraught the next morning, I wondered down the STA Travel attached to the hostel, credit card in hand and ended up booking what turned out to be one of the highest highlights so far, my sailing trip, trip to magnetic island, mission beach and cairns….but more to come on this…. with the knowledge of my holiday within a holiday the commencing the next day I decided to go a casino….lasted about 35 seconds on a roulette table, 5 seconds longer then Barry mind! Quickest 50 bucks I’d ever spent, wondered back to my hostel once more only to decide to play cards in the community area, as my dorm was out of bounds for a short while, with no money involved, we played more cards sipping on water, more contacts more giggles!

The next day day dawned far to quick, with a twindge of a headache and an ache of my eyes, oh holiday within was about to begin.
